Whats the goal of coaching-2

So I want to share with you a recent conversation that I had with the director of sales who was thinking about how to better coach his sales teams.

And the question I asked him, the very first, was what's the goal of coaching?

And his answer, like probably many others, was to have sales people perform better of course. Now, think about that for a minute. What does it take to get your salespeople to perform better?

They have to change their behaviors.

How do you get people to change their behaviors? The very first step to changing behaviors, to breaking and altering behavior chains, is self-awareness. So when you think about, what is the ultimate goal of coaching, it's to make your sellers, your managers, more aware of the behavior that needs to be changed.

How do you do that?

By asking really great questions, by pausing, by practicing things with them and new approaches. This is how we get people to change behaviors and create the awareness that is needed to do so.
