To be a GOAT Requires Mental Toughness and Unselfishness

Posted by Carole Mahoney  2/6/17 4:27 PM

This probably won't be the only comparison to sales that you will see come from the Superbowl. In fact, it probably won't be the only one you see in the coming weeks from this blog.

After the Patriots won the championship game that sent  them to Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons, both Brady and Belichick were interviewed about the win and the team. What stood out to me was two corresponding comments from both of them:

Belichick: “It’s all about the players. We’ve got great players. They work hard, they’re unselfish and they’re tough.”

Brady: “We’ve won a lot of different ways under a lot of different circumstances. This mental toughness, man, that’s what it’s all about and this team’s got it.”

13 Myths That Prevent Salespeople from Improving

Posted by Carole Mahoney  1/13/17 1:11 PM

Today is Friday the 13th, and it seems like all week long I have been witness to example after example of fear controlling how people around me behave. Maybe it is the full moon this week, or people’s reactions to the pending inauguration of our President Elect here in the US.

How do you develop your 5am worthy goal?

Posted by Carole Mahoney  1/4/17 5:00 AM

I am not, nor have I ever been, a morning person. Even at birth, I didn’t want to ‘wake up’ (I was 4 weeks over my due date- keep in mind this was in the 70’s…) In grade school, I got scolded a lot from my mother to ‘get back to bed’ when I would sneak downstairs to see what the grownups were doing. Later in high school, I had a flashlight under my bed to read the 2-3 books I had going at the time. Getting up 5 min before the bus got there was normal.

Who had the greatest impact on you in 2016?

Posted by Carole Mahoney  12/23/16 9:52 AM

Being the oldest of five, I had the fortunate experience of being the first to try things out. Phrases like “I can do it myself!” were common vernacular. To which my Nana and mom would often say “No one is an island, we are all connected. So stop being so stubborn and let someone help you.”

I’ll admit, letting others help me is one of my biggest struggles. I’m not sure if it is my Irish/Polish stubbornness, my first child syndrome at work, or just that fact that I am a bit of a control enthusiast.

The impact of a negative outlook on salespeople

Posted by Carole Mahoney  11/29/16 3:57 PM

A few weeks ago I wrote about one of our clients whose sales manager who still sold and would take opportunities from him. He was a generally toxic manager that was a burden to work with.

On a previous coaching call when our client, let’s call him Ralph, shared that he wasn’t enjoying what he was doing and wasn’t seeing results, maybe he should leave and find someplace else? I responded that yes- your manager sucks. Your leadership hasn’t done anything about it yet. But none of that changes the fact that your results are your results- you have to own it. It’s not your manager’s fault, your company’s pricing, product or process’ fault, and it’s not the buyer’s fault. And then we dug into some of the opportunities he was working on.

What does it take to close more sales now?

Posted by Carole Mahoney  11/23/16 7:47 AM

It’s the end of the calendar year and the topic on everyone’s mind, in their inbox, and at the water cooler is- how do we close these last deals? What do we need to pull out of the hat to meet our goal in these last days? What can really be done to impact Q4 revenue that hasn’t already been tried? A new tech tool? Better use of the tools we have? A trick, tip, hack, or technique?

Over the past month we’ve been working with the salesperson, the manager, and the owner of a small technology services business. After we got started with them, we learned the details of how the owner hired the sales person, trained them, and expected to see results of at least 5 deals a month. But up until now, nothing had happened in 3 months.

3 common self limiting beliefs that cost you sales.

Ever tried to move furniture with someone who assumed you had your end of the couch? Only to find as it tumbled down the stairs that you didn't in fact have it? They believed you did though- so they acted accordingly.

Which self limiting sales belief is costing you sales?

Posted by Carole Mahoney  8/19/16 9:26 AM

I often get strange looks when people ask what I do and I reply; "Eliminate the headtrash that prevents salespeople from getting customers." Usually the first question is; “What do you mean by headtrash?” Followed by; ”How does that prevent them from getting customers?”
